Introductory Statistics Using R
An Introduction to R
Choosing and Using Statistics: A Biologists Guide
R is a great open source statistical analysis package available for essentially every platform and an essential bioinformatic tool. If your stats are a bit rusty (like mine), it can be daunting trying to learn it. This book nicely refreshes your stats knowledge while teaching R. If you've boned up on your stats (or read the previous book) and want to start harnessing the power of R, this might be the book for you. There are a lot of statistical algorithms out there and just because the program you're using has it doesn't mean you should use it. This book should help you figure it all out.

Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics
Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics
MySQL
Perl is an incredibly powerful tool for dealing with text in all its forms. It's been adopted whole-heartedly by bioinformaticists, and this book teaches Perl with bioinformatics in mind. This is another Perl book by O'Reilly and Associates specifically geared towards bioinformatics. Bioinformatics means dealing with lots of data and lots of data means you're going to need a good database. MySQL is powerful open source relational database that you can graduate to when you outgrow Access.

Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills
Unix for Mac
Unix for Mac OS X
This is a general computer guide for bioinformatics that will help you get started with all of the other tools discussed on this page (as well as many, many more). If you are doing your bioinformatics work on a Mac you're in luck. Mac OS X is built on Unix (a powerful and stable OS for which many tools have been created). If you're new to the world of Unix (and Linux isn't for you), this is your book. The preponderance of biologists who use Macs, combined with a strong surge in the popularity of Unix and the increasing importance of bioinformatics for the everyday researcher, led me to list another book for teaching Mac lovers about their newfound Unix power.
