USB started out at United States Biochemical (1970s). They were purchased in 2003 by Amersham which then merged with Pharmacia Biotech in 1997 to become AmershamPharmacia Biotech. The biochemicals, molecular biology enzymes and manual DNA sequencing reagents business was purchased from AmershamPharmacia Biotech in 1998 to (re)create USB.
