Founded as EG&G in 1931, they took the name PerkinElmer in 1999 when they acquired the analytical instrument business of what was then known as Perkin-Elmer. The original Perkin-Elmer split into Celera and PE Biosystems (which later became Applied Biosystems and merged with Invitrogen in 2008 to become Life Technologies).
