Motorola Life Sciences is the biochip unit of Motorola which produces the eSensor, a low density electronic microarray. The chips consist of 16 electrodes, each containing a unique oligonucleotide probe. Hybridization with a complementary target completes a circuit, allowing the event to be detected. Motorola has created a chip reader specific to their platform which can analyze 48 chips at a time. The ultra low density nature of this platform (16 probes per chip) essentially confines the eSensor to diagnostic applications.

History:

Founded as a unit of Motorola in 1998. They have sold off the CodeLink unit to Amersham Biosciences, but are currently keeping the eSensor group (in Pasadena) (10/2002). It now appears that this group no longer exists as a separate entity.
