Hybritech, founded in 1978 by Ivor Royston and Howard Birndorf, was San Diego's first biotech firm. It went public in 1981 and was acquired by Eli Lilly in 1986 (and subsequently by Beckman Coulter?). A large number of sucessful San Diego biotech companies were subsequently founded or co-founded by Hybritech alumni, including San Diego's first biotech contribution to the NASDAQ 100 stock index - IDEC Pharmaceuticals.
