Amedis Pharmaceuticals is the world leader in exploiting the use of the element silicon, in medicinal chemistry. Amedis is applying this technology through two types of projects - Silicon Switches and Silicon Fast Followers. Silicon Switches are known drugs or failed development compounds in which a carbon atom has been replaced by silicon to overcome the deficit of the original compound. Silicon Fast Follower projects exploit literature data about validated, high market value targets to generate silicon containing scaffolds and high quality NCEs.
Amedis’ approach provides a unique opportunity because the incorporation of silicon into drug like molecules provides the dual benefits of improved therapeutic profile and dominant patent position. The application of this novel, patentable medicinal chemistry to validated biological targets has allowed Amedis to generate a strong portfolio of therapeutically competitive programmes, with a significantly lower risk profile when compared to classic drug discovery strategies. This proprietary ‘medicinal chemistry engine’ will allow Amedis to significantly enhance its future product and collaboration pipeline.
Amedis has applied both of these approaches to generate a robust, sustainable development pipeline in key areas of unmet medical need including cancer, emesis, chronic pain and dermatology.
