Ambit uses their proprietary ProteomeScan(TM) (a form of chemical genomics, the buzz word de jour, which involves protein phage display and affinity chromatography) to identify the protein targets of therapeutic small molecule and peptide drugs whose mechanism of action is unknown. Novel drugs can then be developed against these targets which, although their identities are unknown, are already proven to be therapeutically relevant.
Ambit has developed a novel form of phage display which allows entire proteins to be displayed on the coat of the phage particles (as opposed to just peptides). Large numbers of these phage are created (from cDNA libraries, for example) and screened in parallel against small molecule and peptide drugs. The positive proteins are then identified from the DNA sequence contained within the phage.
- History:
Ambit, which was formerly Aventa (too close to Aventis, I suppose), was founded in May 2000 by David Lockhart (in part, at least) formerly with Affymetrix. |
