Accelrys was launched in June 2001, combining Molecular Simulations, Synopsys Scientific Systems, Oxford Molecular, GCG, and Synomics Ltd. and was a subsidiary of Pharmacopeia. In order to split the drug discovery unit away from the software unit, Pharmacopeia spun out a company called Pharmacopeia Drug Discovery (which operates under the old Pharmacopeia website). Pharmacopeia then changed its name to Accelrys.
